Three New Faculty Members Join Bioengineering

Core Faculty Reaches Milestone of 20 Members
Drs. Xiang, Lee and Chen

The Department of Bioengineering welcomes three new core faculty members in 2023. Assistant Professor Tingting Xiang began joined in January 2023 and Associate Professor Chung Hao Lee and Assistant Professor Juhong Chen began in January 2024.

Dr. Xiang's joins us from her previous position as assistant professor in biology at UNC Charlotte. Her research focuses on understanding and engineering coral-algal symbiosis. Her work hopes to help mitigate the unfortunate environmental crisis of coral bleaching.

Dr. Lee was previously associate professor in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. His research focuses on multi-scale computational biomolecular mechanics. Specifically his group integrates computational/experimental biomechanics methods the bioengineering principles, smart materials and advanced manufacturing to develop emerging technologies to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.  Dr. Lee wa recently elevated to Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA).

Dr. Chen previously served as assistant professor of biological systems engineering at Virginia Tech. His research focuses on  the development of advanced and innovative bioengineering and biosensing approaches that can be used to detect emerging infectious diseases in food, environmental, and clinical samples.

The new hires bring the faculty to a new milestone of twenty members and help strengthen the mission of cutting-edge research and teaching.
