Dr. Jin Nam’s Research Featured as a Cover of Tissue Engineering

Tissue EngineeringA recent publication from Professor Jin Nam's team, entitled "Dynamic regulation of bone morphogenetic proteins in engineered osteochondral constructs by biomechanical stimulation," has been featured in the cover art of journal Tissue Engineering (Tissue Eng Part A. 2013 Mar;19(5-6):783-92). In this article, his team showed that biomechanical signals involve in the regulation of morphogenesis in the engineered osteochondral tissues. The signaling interplays between chondrocytes and osteoblasts through the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) were significantly enhanced by biomechanical stimulation to facilitate the neo-tissue formation. These results were compared to the regulation of BMPs in vivo demonstrating the physiological relevance of biomechanical stimulation in the skeletal tissue formation. This study suggests the critical role of mechanical stimulation in the tissue engineering of cartilage/bone.
