MRI Guided Transcranial Focused Ultrasound

Abstract: The integration of MRI and transcranial focused ultrasound represents a disruptive technology that has many potential applications. This seminar will provide an overview of a new research program I established in this area that has three major research themes: neurosurgery, drug delivery, and neuromodulation. Methods, applications, and progress in each of these areas will be reviewed and future research opportunities highlighted. Topics covered will span from instrumentation research to clinical trials.

Biography: Bruce Pike (PhD – McGill, Postdoc - Stanford) has made a multitude of landmark scientific contributions via the design and application of novel MRI techniques to measure the brain’s morphology, microstructure, connectivity, functional organization, hemodynamics, and energetics across the lifespan in health and disease; he has over 400 publications on this work that have been cited over 50,000 times. Dr. Pike has held major leadership positions in brain imaging research; he was Director of the Brain Imaging Centre at Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) for 15 years and for the past 10 years he has led the Image Science program at the University of Calgary where he is a Professor of Radiology and Clinical Neurosciences and holds the CAIP Chair in Health Brain Aging. He is a Senior Editor of Imaging Neuroscience, a Senior Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and serves on numerous international Scientific Advisor Boards such as for the Human Connectome Lifespan Project.
