The Department of Bioengineering is proud to announce our next annual 

Virtual Graduate Student Open House!

Monday, October 16th, 2023 at 9:00AM (PT) until Wednesday, October 18th, 2023 at 6:00PM (PT)

Students interested in learning more about UCR'S wonderful Mechanical Engineering Program should register via this link: https://grad.ucr.edu/register/GOH23. Please fill out the form and select the Academic Program you are interested in. For Bioengineering, please select "Engineering". This will prompt a list of the different departments in Engineering.  The Bioengineering Information Session and Application Workshop will be held on Tuesday October 17th at 9:00AM (PT)

Please join the  Graduate Student Affairs Officer, Manuel Perez during this session. This is an ideal moment to learn more about the program, ask questions pertaining to the program, and also to learn why you should join the UCR Community! 

In addition, students who attend at least one academic program session are eligible for a $40 application fee discount! 

*You must attend at least one academic program session to be eligible for a one-time , single application fee discount. It is highly important that your application email and date of birth match the one you provided at the time of registration for the Virtual Open House; this will ensure that you receive your discount.

Graduate Application Overview 

Applications to the BIG M.S. and Ph.D. program are accepted through the UC Riverside Graduate Application Fall Quarter Only. The priority deadline for admission and fellowship consideration is January 5th. The deadline to apply for admission consideration only is June 1st for all applicants.

Application Fee

The nonrefundable application fee must be paid online by credit card (VISA or MasterCard) prior to submission of your application. Please note that regardless of circumstances or application outcome, this fee is not refundable.

$135.00 for U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents
$155.00 for international/non-immigrant applicants

Application Fee Wavier

UCR students enrolled in the BS+MS Program can currently request an application waiver from the department office.

A limited amount of fee waivers for financial hardship are available for qualified applicants who are a U.S. citizen or current Permanent Resident. Please visit https://graduate.ucr.edu/fee-waivers for more detail. Fee waiver is not available for international students. 

Requirements

In addition to the following requirements listed below, all applicants must meet the general requirements of the UCR Graduate Council as set forth by the Graduate Division. The Department of Bioengineering requires that you possess a cumulative 3.2 minimum GPA during the junior and senior year of you undergraduate education 

* An M.S. degree is not a prerequisite for entering the Ph.D. program. 

* The GRE is no longer required to apply to the M.S. or Ph.D. program. 

Applicants will need to have completed coursework in chemistry, physics, math, biochemistry, biology and engineering. Students without an undergraduate engineering degree should have excellent training in mathematics and the physical sciences. 

Specific recommendations for students without an undergraduate engineering degree are: 

  • Two years of mathematics 
  • One year of physics
  • one year of inorganic chemistry including lab 
  • one year of organic chemistry including lab 
  • one course in biochemistry 
  • one course of molecular biology

Students with strong academic records may be admitted with limited coursework deficiencies, provided that these are satisfied by appropriate coursework taken during the first two years of graduate study. 

Domestic Students 

In order to be considered for admission in the Department of Bioengineering, you must upload ALL of the following directly to the online application: 

  • A statement of purpose 
  • A personal history statement (CVs or Resumes may not be submitted in lieu of a personal history statement)
  • A total of 3 letters of recommendation 
  • upload one copy of unofficial transcripts to the online Graduate Application from ALL institutions attended after secondary school (high school)

International Students

In order to be considered for admission in the Department of Bioengineering, you must upload ALL of the following directly to the online application: 

  • A statement of purpose 
  • A personal history statement (CVs or Resumes may not be submitted in lieu of a personal history statement)
  • A total of 3 letters of recommendation 
  • upload one copy of unofficial transcripts and degree certificates that are in the original language accompanied by certified English translations to the online Graduate Application from EACH institution attended after secondary school (high school) 
  • TOFEL Requirement: 550 paper test score minimum and 80 iBT score minimum 
  • IELTS Requirement: An overall score of 7 with no band score less than 6
